American Psycho - Bret Easton Ellis
holy hell what a tedious book. this is, i think, exactly what ellis wanted. his characters live in a static world of complete and blissful superficiality. the details of their banal lives, including complete descriptions of every character's outfit each day, fill up the bulk of the novel, with of course the bits about chopping people up and other intense scenes of violence.

i didn't like it until i finished it. then i looked at why i didn't like it and realized i played into what ellis had set out to do: create (or describe) a world filled with completely despicable characters. well done, effective, but nothing i'd recommend to people to read, and i definitely wouldn't read it again. classify as required reading.
